HR students have it very good these days with tremendous opportunities and multiple choices. The scenario is very encouraging because companies themselves are enlightened about the important role which HR plays in the success story.

Gone are the days when the HR manager was merely responsible for ensuring mandatory and statutory requirements, albeit grudgingly. He was the man every one hated and he shunned those who came with grievances or requests. The scenario has drastically changed in the last decade. The HR person evinces more respect, responsibility, and is more knowledgeable than a man who merely needs to be talented at cracking the whip.

Finding the first HR position calls for skill, knowledge, and good contacts. Placement studies show that most HR jobs are got through personal contacts or networking. Developing a network of HR contacts early can be very helpful. Many companies opt for campus recruitment while others do not. The HR field is growing in professionalism and scope.

According to Trevor Fernandes, a consultant, Human Capital Advisory Services, with one of the Big 4 consulting companies, Delhi, "The present economy has spurred an environment of global competition where organisations are challenged to leverage the best talent for sustainable competitive differentiation.  While the demand for talent is growing exponentially, the supply of it is far from satisfactory, presenting a challenge, that of managing the equilibrium - subject to a volatile market dynamics. This has led organisations to consciously architect their business strategies along the Human Capital Management (HCM) model.”

"Opportunities for fresh HR students are many," says Keith Pinto, senior GM-Training & Management Development, GlaxSmithKline Pharmaceuticals. He suggests, “Consulting, HR Verticals/Generalist, Teaching Associates, Recruiting Houses, Training Houses and  ITES-Content Development as some of the opening lines.”

With growing importance being accorded to HR, the need for professionals is booming. Gautam Ghosh, consultant, Vyaktitva, a Performance Support Consulting firm, Delhi, says, "There is a growth of HR industry which is also driving a need of professionals to drive the recruiting, training, HR consulting and HR outsourcing industry. These are focused both on the Indian as well as the outsourcing market.”

What are the opportunities before fresh graduates in HR? Typically in HR, opportunities may be either as a generalist, specialist or a consulting profile. A generalist does some bit of everything. A specialist may specialise in areas like Recruitment, Learning and Development, Compensation and Benefits.

According to Fernandes, "If one only holds a graduate degree the opportunities exist only as recruitment executives in a search firm or as a payroll executive handling payroll data entry and MIS. Typically, all HR positions these days require an MBA degree, or in a few cases an MSW is accepted. One can rise to a specialist after two years of experience as a generalist."

Pinto points out to the latest trends in HR which are -  eLearning, Total Reward Management, Campus Bridges, Employee Engagement, Continuous Learning & Development, Development Centers for Competency & Skill Development, Career & Succession Management, Talent Management, HRIS, OD Interventions, Measurements on ROI, Performance Management, Psychometrics for Profiling.

Salaries depend on an organisation's size, economic activity, profitability, and geographic location. "The two key factors determining salary are experience levels and the kind of company one comes from," informs Fernandes.  According to Ghosh," The industries that are more lucrative for HR students are Consulting, IT/ITES as well as FMCG. The salaries offered to fresh graduates would range from Rs 3 lakh for an MBA from a less known institute up to Rs 9-10 lakh from someone coming from a premier institute."

HR is now a key component of an organisation's senior management. It is not looked at as a mere service department lapping up resources but as a contributing field, and vital to the performance of an organisation. HR students have it very good these days, with tremendous opportunities and multiple choices. The scenario is very encouraging because companies themselves are so enlightened about the important role which HR plays in the success story.
