Amitabh Kumar, Head – HR, NEC India shares his first job experience from the year 1991, which not only brought him new opportunities but also marked a sea change for the Indian economy as a whole
My first job...
...was in the year 1991 with a manufacturing company in Ghaziabad (U.P.). It was called TeleTube Electronics which was into producing Black and White picture tubes. Private sector jobs were not very popular in those days and not much employment scope existed in Tier II cities inspite of good professional qualifications.
In those times, job search meant sending unsolicited application to various employers. I was lucky to get a call in response to a newspaper advertisement in the vacancy column of a national daily.
My first salary...
...was an amount of Rs 3000 per month. Year 1991 was a difficult year for India as the nation was grappling with problems like anti reservation agitation. The threat of nation going bankrupt pervaded everywhere and the job market was depressed, to say the least.
Key challenges
My organisation was a small unit with unorganised workforce, due to which there were a host of issues involved at the workplace. The company was making efforts to change its products mix and the key challenge was to motivate and equip the workforce with right skills in this direction. The rules had to be kept simple and applied consistently throughout the organisation as workers failed to understand reason for exceptions. In the absence of separate departments for certain specific HR and accounting activities, I was constantly under pressure as I became the single point of contact for all the HR related concerns.
Important lessons
The important lesson imbibed during my first job was on workforce engagement and motivation. I learnt that for any initiative to succeed, it is important to obtain unanimous support of all the stake holders involved.
Reminiscing
I still remember this incident where I was entrusted with the responsibility for a project. I went ahead and submitted the proposal which I thought was good. But the project submitted was rejected the very next day. I was disappointed on the rejection but learnt that it happened due to the poor quality of the document. From this, I derived the important lesson of simplifying and presenting the thoughts in a structured manner to appeal to the management for any kind of approval.
