Manisha Amol, Vice President - Marketing, Modicare Limited shares his first job experience

1) What was your first job like? What were your learnings from it?

The first job was a very challenging one after completing MBA with specialisation in Marketing.HCL ltd was the first organisation and I started my career as a marketing trainee. All my friends and relatives had advised me not to get into the sales field at the beginning as it was supposedly very tough for a girl to make a good start. It was considered a male dominated job. I have always loved to take challenges and I did the same. It was initially tough to sell computers in the educational institutions but I proved myself in a short period. This job provided a lot of independence and decision making at that level. This helped me shape up as a mature individual ready to take on any challenge in my future assignments.

2) What was your first pay cheque like? When did you get it and how much was it for?

The first pay cheque was Rs 3000/- per month in 1989.I was so excited to receive it and had a blast with my family and friends.

3) What was the first challenge that you faced at work?

I was the only girl in a team of 40 sales persons. It was very difficult to convince my boss that I was equally ambitious as my male colleagues. I had aggression in me and could deliver to the expected level of performance.

4) What has been your first most memorable experience at work, you moment of glory?

When I bagged the biggest order of 33 lakhs from one of the technical institutes in Delhi, it was a memorable moment. My name was displayed on the notice board as the star performer. That was a moment of pride in my career as I had proved to myself and everyone else in the company.

5) When was your first promotion?

I got the first promotion after completion of the first year itself.

6) What was your first goof up at work?

I had taken a long leave for my marriage. I did not report to office immediately after the leave period. This led to a lot of speculation in the office that I had quit the job. It was an embarrassing moment to face all my colleagues when I resumed office after a gap of 5 days.
