1. What is the difference between corporate wellness and employee fitness?
In true sense, both go hand in hand. In fact, Employee fitness is an integral part of Corporate Wellness. Corporate Wellness is a combination of culture wellness, workplace wellness, employee safety, health and productivity management. This basically means that corporate wellness covers combination of Organisational, educational and environmental activities designed to support behaviour conducive to employees. Both are efforts to improve the health wellness and lifestyle of employees.
2. How can HR managers take care of these?
One of the core objectives of the Human Resources function is ‘employee welfare’. The focus of the HR should be to introduce avenues that promote awareness about wellness and fitness. Educating the employees about the benefits of health consciousness is important. Introducing programs on healthy eating, exercising, yoga and meditation helps in keeping up the energies high. Wellness programs also include introducing health fairs, medical check ups, fitness and nutrition coaching etc. Finally it is an effort to strike a work life balance.
3. Why is the importance of wellness initiatives increasing these days?
A healthy lifestyle impacts every part of our day to day work. The world has become competitive and so have the businesses and individuals. In high performance culture across industries, employees strive hard to make a mark in their careers. This process is not always easy. Employees go through a lot of challenges and stress, which may be professional or personal. Hence, it becomes critical for employers to introduce wellness programs to keep the balance maintained. Every employee is important for the organisation and it is the responsibility of the organisation to ensure that employees are healthy, mentally and physically. A healthy and stress free employee brings in lot of energy and motivation, lower absenteeism, high productivity and positivity to the organization.
4. What are impediments/challenges HR managers might need to face while implementing these?
In spite of these programs initiated by the employers with a specific objective, the major challenge is to ensure high levels of participation from employees. It could be due to lack of personal motivation, investment of time, desire to prioritise health or just a casual resistance due to a certain lifestyle. It then leads to consistency in the implementation of the programs as well. Lower participation is the cause of less effective implementation in a long run.
5. What are the essential features of a wellness program?
Wellness programs concentrate majorly on general health Activities, promoting physical activity and healthy eating, stress management, educating on the adverse effects of smoking and alcohol etc. The objective is essentially to develop healthy and conducive environment in the organisation and for the individual.
