Harpreet S. Grover, Founder and CEO of CoCubes, discusses the major challenges facing the campus recruitment processes and how HR managers should use technology to overcome the gaps
1. What are the major hurdles faced by HR managers in campus placements?
The major hurdles arise from two basic problems. One is that the process itself is very long and secondly, most of it takes place offline. Consequently, right now the only way to attract students is a power point presentation by the company. There is always a risk that the company staff travels as high as 300 km of distance to find that there are no good candidates available. In addition to this, once candidates have been offered a job it is difficult to stay in touch with them till they join. We, at CoCubes, have changed this for our partner firms by bringing a large part of the process online.
2. What proportion of the total recruitment today, takes place through the campus placement model?
It depends and differs from industry to industry. While in consulting the percentage is low, in the IT sector, in the last few years, more than 50 per cent of hires have been through campus interviews even for large firms. ITES is also gradually moving towards a more mature process in campus hiring as a large chunk of graduates now prefer to take a job before going in for further studies.
3. What are the major benefits of hiring fresh graduates from campuses?
There are two major benefits that companies can exploit from hiring freshers on campus. One that I see is that they are cheaper to hire and easier to train. Secondly, given that it is their first job they don’t have any hang-ups from previous experiences.
4. How do you foresee the trends in the campus recruitment methods in future?
Personal touch is very important for both the candidate and the firm to make the final decision. At the same time, if you look at what has happened in the last decade, you will notice that while students have become more tech savvy using mobile and internet, campus hiring processes have remained unchanged. We believe that usage of both mobile and internet to directly reach out to authenticated students will change the way campus recruitment happens, making it cheaper and easier to get to the right candidates by engaging them throughout the year and once in a while making the face to face connect.
5. What would be your advice to HR mangers for conducting efficient campus recruitments?
My advice to the HR fraternity would be to move the current relationship beyond only an MoU with the college or a contact with the TPO to all the students that they want to attract, before visiting a college. They should now make an effort to find out how many candidates are interested and once candidates have been offered a job, find ways to stay in touch with them till they have joined. And I believe that all three can be easily done using technology.
