With a passion for hairdressing, 21-year-old Dhruv, the art director at Drama Salon and Spa and his 16-year-old brother Divisht, the creative director are the youngest in this profession. Let us peek into the creative careers of these young achievers
Early on
In the movie 'When Harry met Sally', Harry says, "When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of the life to start as soon as possible". So is the case with finding one's passion at work. This realization dawned upon Dhruv and Divisht early in their teens. Inspired by their mother Sanndhya Chandra, a hair and beauty expert with twenty years of experience, the brothers were drawn to the prospects of a career in this industry early on in their lives. They quit education to follow a path less taken.
Dhruv’s first stint in this industry was when he was only fifteen. “I started managing my mother’s salon. My key role was to manage the staff and the customers. I could do this since I had watched my mother very closely earlier. I was determined and focused on providing solutions to ensure that both the staff and my customers were satisfied and happy. That alone was quite a task! For me, the entire year was a learning experience and every incident was a step towards a career choice that I soon made.”
Discovering his interest in the field, this science student soon quit his education and joined the Loreal International Hair Academy, Mumbai. Not only is he a certified professional but also a trainer who has expertise in the technical aspects of hair cutting. Dhruv explains how he developed a penchant for training, “On the completion of my course, I was approached to become a trainer at the academy. It was something I was not expecting, but I readily took it up only to realize that I love teaching. I love it when people ‘feel’ beautiful. Hairstyle is an important aspect of one’s personality. The right length, proportions, setting and styling designed to suit your face type and hair type can change the way you look at yourself and of course, the way other people look at you. Also over the years I have realized that each professional brings something new to the table and training can bring out the best in you.”
A platform for creativity
Dhruv’s experience as a trainer laid the foundation of his new venture Drama, where he brings new techniques to the floor and trains his staff, keeping them abreast with the latest trends in the industry. The younger brother Divisht has successfully defined his niche too. Today at sixteen years of age, when most kids are not even thinking about a career, Dhruv brings refreshing concepts, colors and looks to the floor at Drama. How did he make his career choice? Divisht explains, “My mother and brother are from the Hair and Beauty industry. I was inspired by them. I have always been inclined towards creative ideas and concepts. Hairdressing could give me the perfect platform to showcase my creative abilities. Initially even the Loreal International Academy thought that I was too young to decide a career path for myself. But I insisted on making this choice since I was very sure about this. Seeing my eagerness, they agreed and accepted me as a student. My parents’ faith in me helped me follow this career. My friends were, both, envious and supportive of my decision. Of course, having my brother in the same industry made the choice easier!”
A typical day
For Dhruv and Divisht, a typical day starts with an interactive session with the staff. Dhruv adds, “A typical day involves getting models, experimenting with new sectioning patterns for haircuts, trying different products on different hair types and working towards creating unique styles. Followed by this, I move on to my various appointments lined up throughout the day along and consulting sessions with the clients.”
Divisht, who primarily focuses on color patterns and techniques, adds with a smile, “My day starts at 11.30 a.m and continues until 10.00 p.m. At Drama everyday is a live performance and my motto is to simply ‘rock’ every single day!”
So, why Drama? The brothers sum up, “For our hair dressers and therapists, ‘the salon’ is a stage where they perform their skills to satisfy the clients’ needs. They use their expertise with perfect artistry every day. Hair dressing is not just a profession but a ‘drama’ at this salon and spa!”
With a concept like this, where they even use candles and fancy decoration in the skin room and innovative lighting to create different effects inside various zones of the salon, the brothers continue to receive many a standing ovations for their ‘drama’!
