As part of its commitment to making a difference, L'Oreal has signed an agreement with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to create the international campaign 'Hairdressers against AIDS'. It is a joint initiative to combat the spread and impact of Aids by means of a program aimed at hairdressing professionals all over the world. L'Oreal and UNESCO have also joined forces to promote women in scientific research by creating the 'Women in Science' partnership. Each year, L'Oréal India awards five scholarships to economically challenged girls to enable them to pursue graduate studies in science. Out of over 300 applications every year, 15 applicants are shortlisted and are interviewed by the jury.
L'Oreal has also taken the green route for manufacturing in India.The Company's Chakan plant near Pune saved around 50 tonne of plastic in 2008 by opting for lighter packaging.This year, the company intends to save 100 tonne of plastic. Green initiatives are part of the group's global strategy!
L'Oreal has also organised 'Decoding the Hair,' a fun-meets-science exhibition at Nehru Science Centre which was launched on December 18, 2008 and continues till February 28, 2009.The exhibition has been designed and customised so as to also benefit the blind with text in English Braille and special touch-and-feel elements. The exhibition has also been localised especially for the Indian audience as the text along with the films are presented in Hindi, Marathi and English.
