1) The global economy is facing a downturn, what is the exact scenario of the telecom sector at this point?
For the mobile handset industry, the year 2008 has been a flat year in terms of revenue. It was the first in seven years that this sector did not see any revenue growth. It was interesting because even though we saw a lot of new markets coming up and new consumers in smaller towns joining the mobile brigade, the replacement market was stagnant.
However, we would like to believe that it was a temporary aberration and we will definitely move forward from here.
2) What do you think will rescue this sector from this temporary revenue stagnation?
Besides the escalation from new markets and consumers, there will be innovation led growth in this sector. With the introduction of new products in the market and new technology there will be value addition, which will also entice existing users to upgrade.
3) How do you see the telecom sector shaping up in the next two to three years? Any predictions for 2009?
According to latest surveys, the mobile industry will touch a consumer base of 750 million by 2013. Now if the prediction holds true, we will definitely see a lot of growth happening in a couple of years.
Different segments of the telecom sector will see positive growth. Innovative technology will help us introduce new features and help in making a phone more than just a device of communication.
The mobile phone industry has 320 million at present, so we can expect 450 million users by the end of 2009.
4) Can you elaborate on the job profiles that continue to be sought after in the telecom sector and the skills required to excel in them?
Marketing and sales continue to be the most popular profiles. This is because there is an opportunity of 2-3 % growth every month.
This sector is apt for people who love to innovate and have an entrepreneurial bent of mind. Also people who have a love for technology and want to learn more about this field can also join the telecom sector. Key account management, regulatory functions, product development are some of the other popular areas.
